FAQ

Q: When do I choose to use a fluoride gel or a rinse?

A: Traditionally, 1.23% APF (acidulated phosphate fluoride) GEL is the most common in-office product used in the prevention of tooth decay.  Widely used for children. RINSES are typically used as an alternative to fluoride tray when patients cannot tolerate the gel or foam.

Q: Wich method takes the least amount of time?

A: Fluoride application is most effective when applied for up to 4 minutes. APF gel and foams are marketed as ONE MINUTE FORMULA to increase patient acceptance and comfort.

Q: Are fluoride treatments effective after age 16?

A: Yes, Topical fluoride for the lifetime of a tooth is widely accepted and continues to be an area of ongoing research. For adults, it is recommended to use Neutral fluorides (Gels and foams) because many have esthetic restorations that can discolor with APF formulas.

Q: At which age do we start applying fluoride treatment for children?

A: Usually around 6 years old.  (Except in high risk situations, where bi-annual treatment may begin at 3 years old.). The 60 second fluoride GEL of FOAM is recommended for children as well as Duraflor.

Q: What is the PH level of an acidulated fluoride compared to a neutral?

A: Acidulated formulas range around a ph3.5 and ph7 for neutral formula.  Neutral formula is recommended and used mostly with adults due to esthetic restorations.

Q: What are the benefits in choosing a fluoride product?

A: When it comes to patient acceptance, there are several important considerations.  Accepted flavors, texture, ease of usage and effectiveness are all features to consider.  Fluoride benefits include preventing decay, recurrent decay and sensitivity.
